Chinese carmaker Great Wall Motors may set up plant in Pune

Chinese SUV maker Great Wall Motors, whose SUV's were spotted earlier also in India has now been speculated that a new plant in Pune would be setup for manufacturing cars in India. China's eighth-largest carmaker has zeroed in on Pune in Maharashtra for the plant and aims to start production by 2016.

Great Wall will be the second Chinese player after Foton Motors finalized India and had decided to set up their shop in Pune area. There are reports of the Chinese Foton to start construction in Q3 2013 however the slowdown that the Indian Auto industry is witnessing, could lead them to delay the start of construction in India.

GWM has also decided to launch its globally success Haval H5 model in India, two people with knowledge of the development said. The company was earlier considering Gujarat and Tamil Nadu to set up its plant, but chose Maharashtra due to a host of incentives offered by the state government.

The Chinese company has already sent a team of senior executives to India to workout a schedule to foray into the domestic market. The finer details of investment and capacity would be revealed in the next few months, the person added. Xi Liang Chen, Indian operation project manager of the Chinese automaker, declined to comment on the India strategy.

It was earlier reported that the Chinese carmaker is negotiating with ICML to use their Andhra Pradesh facility and manufacture cars here however as per the sources, the deal didnot finalized and the carmaker has decided to go solo in India.  Their cars will be displayed during Auto Expo 2014 in Feb 2014.
