BMW Mottorad and TVS have joined their hands together to launch sub 500cc motorcycles in India. It has already been in news that the two would soon join hands via Husqvarna brand. (View more details here)
Speaking on the tie-up with TVS Motor, Stepan Schaller, President BMW Motorrad said, In view of the changing motorcycle market, demographics development and increasing environmental demands, we are expanding our product range so as to tap into fresh growth potential. In future, we will be able to offer vehicles in smaller capacity classes in addition to BMW Motorrad core segments."
The deal is expected to help both TVS Motor and BMW Motorrad. While it may help TVS regain its losing market share, for BMW, the deal will give the German company a platform and an opportunity to expand operations in India.
TVS Motor has been consistently losing its market share and currently has only 13% market share in the two-wheeler segment against 14% in FY '12 and 15% in FY '11
The BMW Motorrad model program comprises 19 premium motorcycle and scooter models from 650 to 1600 cc in the categories Enduro, Sport, Roadster, Tour and Urban Mobility. The company is a market leader in 13 countries while its core markets are Germany, USA, France, Italy and Brazil.
