Renault India has increased prices of Duster SUV by more than 1 Lac INR in less than a year !

Renault India launched the muscular looking yet a Compact SUV in India on 04th July 2012 and as you would remember we gave you the details of the cars including the feature details, pricing and Images (Click here to view more). You would remember (could see here), the prices of Renault Duster varied from INR 7.19 Lac to INR 11.29 Lac for the top end Diesel variant.

However, in less than a month, the French car maker increased the prices of Renault Duster by more than INR 1 Lac, on road prices. Consider, the below mentioned example, for sake of uniformity, we consider one variant and stick to it for our further discussions on this - Let us consider Renault Duster Diesel 85 PS Option pack priced at INR 9.99 Lac at time of launch, ex-showroom, Delhi. The on-road prices were INR 11.85 Lac, Delhi

The French carmaker received huge response for the segment creating Compact SUV in India and started increasing the prices of the car along with the hype created for the car in India. The current price of same Renault Duster Diesel 85 PS Option pack is INR 10.79 Lac, ex-showroom delhi. This means, an exact 80,000 increase over the launch price.

In case, we consider the retrospective increase in prices of Registration and Car Insurance, which are a percentage of ex-showroom price the total effective on-road prices would be higher by apprx. INR 100,000 than the on-road prices at the time of the launch.

Seems like the French carmaker is encashing on the hype that the car has created in the market and people are forgeting that at the price of INR 13 Lac, you could get a real SUV (say Safari Storme or XUV 5OO) with 2.2L engine and churning out 140 PS of power.

However, with Ford EcoSport launch coming nearby, within next two months, Renault could face a threat and could then revisit the prices of its popular selling model in India.

The top end variant of Duster in Delhi is priced at INR 11.99 Lac which means apprx. INR 13.5 Lac, on-road prices. Do you think, is it worth paying INR 13.5 Lac for a Compact SUV or better going for a real life SUV ?
