Will VW Taigun be able to compete with Renault's Duster and Ford's EcoSport

VW has displayed its Compact SUV range in the Sao Paulo Motor show in 2012. The upcoming SUV will be based on Up! platform and will be powered by 1.0L 75 bhp motor similar to Ford EcoSport's 1.0L 120 bhp petrol engine. The car was displayed in Brazil and as per the car maker, they are so happy with the response of audience that the company's headquarters have given them a green signal for its production.

The Taigun will be smaller than the EcoSport with dimensions of 3.86 m length, 1.73 m width and 1.57 m height, sporting a wheelbase of 2.47 m. The EcoSport in contrast measures 4.24 m long, 1.76 m wide and 1.62 m high, with a wheelbase of 2.52 m.

On the sidelines of the Sao Paulo Motor Show, Volkswagen Sales Chief Christian Klingler said “A small SUV would have promising market potential for example in India, South America, Mexico and partly in China.”

The Mini-SUV if made for India too, could have a huge potential for VW India too, as the Compact segment market is showing a huge boost in the emerging markets especially India as of now, with the consumer willing to pay a little more to upgrade from sedan to a SUV, say Renault Duster that we saw in India and is willing to upgrade from hatchback to a Mini SUV for India, say Mahindra Quanto.

Will it be able to beat the Renault Duster and VW Taigun, only time will tell.
