Tata Safari Storme was first displayed at Auto Expo 2012 and was expected to be launched in April 2012 with a name "Tata Safari Merlin". However, after the customer feedback well taken up at Auto Expo 2012, Tata Motors decided to make further changes in the already planned to build Tata Safari and was thus named as Tata Safari Storme and included a host of new features which would add more to the new safari than its predecessor.
The Tata Safari Storme will retain the 2.2 Liter DICOR engine producing 140 Bhp of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties will be handled by a reworked 5 speed manual transmission and the four wheel drive option along with the low ratio will be made available on the top end variant of the Storme. What has changed on the Safari Storme visually lies in the cosmetics and the interiors of the SUV. The weight of the body is reduced to tune of 100-110 Kgs by introducing lighter & stronger Ladder frame chassis with hydroform technology.
