Hyundai to enter WRC with i20 - to be shown at Paris Motor Show 2012

The South Korean based automaker Hyundai is planning to enter the World Rally Championship with its own specially modified i20, which will be officially presented to the public at the 2012 Paris Motor Show this month.

Hyundai will be the seconds car manufacturer to make its debut in the 2014 World Rally Championship season, after Toyota, which has announced a couple of months ago that a Yaris based racer will be soon revealed. Volkswagen is also planning to enter the WRC, along with BMW’s MINI, which is intending to compete as a manufacturer. Unfortunately we don’t have any extra details on the Hyundai i20 WRC car but the model is expected to be presented at the Paris Motor Show on the 27th of September.

When Hyundai takes field at the 2013 WRC, it will be nearly a decade after which Hyundai quit the series. Hyundai participated in the WRC from 2000 to 2003, without much success. In the ensuing decade when it was away from the sport, Hyundai has grown into a big power in the car industry, with its products being big sellers across the world. So, the firm will be hoping to do well in the rally circuit as well. More importantly, participation in the 2013 WRC is expected to give Hyundai a good opportunity to improve the ride and handling of its products, two factors that Hyundai has been lagging behind in.
