Yamaha Ray to be launched on September 14, 2012

India Yamaha Motors will launch its first scooter, the Ray in India on September 14. The Japanese two wheeler manufacturer has already created a lot of buzz around Ray by opening a pre-launch contest and by signing up Deepika Padukone as its brand ambassador.

As the launch is approaching the dealers are calling up prospective buyers and enquiring about the plans of purchasing the Ray scooter. One can book the scooter by paying a down payment of Rs. 500. The Ray will be priced in the range of 51,000 ex-showroom.

Yamaha had showcased the scooter at the 2012 Auto Expo and will be equipped with a 113cc, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled SOHC engine which will produce around 8 bhp of power @ 8000 rpm. The company claims a mileage of 45 km/l which seems decent for this scooter.

The Ray will have some tough competition from Honda, TVS and Suzuki which are currently the market leaders. The Activa & Dio are the most preferred followed by the TVS Scooty and Suzuki Access & Swish. Yamaha will have to launch a superior product in terms of comfort, features and mileage if the company plans to make a dent in the scooter market.
