1973 model is the Most Expensive Porsche Racing Car ever sold at Florida Auction for $4.4 million - Images

This stunning race car has become the world's most expensive Porsche after it fetched a $4.4 million (£2.8m) at Florida auction. The 1973 Porsche 917 / 30 Can-Am was so fast that the series it was designed to be raced in was disbanded because rivals couldn't compete with it.

The Porsche just sold at Gooding & Co's Amelia Island auction was never raced and belonged to the collection of the late Porsche collector Matthew Drendel. In total, the sale brought in $36 million, and 70 of the 77 lots sold.

The model was featured in the 1971 Steve McQueen film Le Mans. The Porsche later discontinued the car from production, as it gave an unfair speed advantage over other racing cars. Isn't that surprising, afterall that's what racing cars are meant for !
