Ford Motors India President and Managing Director, Mr. Michael Boneham today said that its upcoming EcoSport SUV's length bumper-bumper is not under 4 meters. He says "The global mini SUV is likely to be longer than four metres in the interests of space and styling, and if so will not qualify for small-car excise duty savings"
The car was earlier speculated to be smaller than four meter and thus having an option of 1 liter petrol engine and 1.5 Liter diesel engine was the perfect one as they qualified the excise duty norms. However, now even this remains a mystery. The car maker says, a decision on this is yet pending.
Though India will be the lead market of this new EcoSport – an older-generation model is already sold in countries like Brazil – Ford doesn’t want to compromise on the standards of space and styling it has already set. As a result, the car is expected to be closer to 4.25m in length, similar to the outgoing model. This decision was also prompted by criticism that the new Fiesta is too cramped in the back seat, a mistake Ford doesn’t want to repeat with the EcoSport.
A positive outcome from this one will be that to make the costs lower the car maker will have to do a maximum amount of localization which in turn will lead to lower spare parts costs. The SUV is now expected to start at a price of Rs 7 Lakh for the petrol engine and could go upto Rs 10 Lakh for the top end Diesel variant. Stay tuned for more details.
