Bajaj unveils small car, RE60 in alliance with Renault Nissan - Tata nano's competitor - VIDEO

Bajaj Auto, India's second largest bike maker, finally unveiled its first four-wheeler, a low-emission car - RE 60 at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi.

Mr Rajiv Bajaj, CEO or Bajaj Auto talks about his new project and repeatedly says Bajaj is an “anti car company” and the RE60 is seen as replacement to the 3-wheeler and not a car. This is a low cost solution, a commercial application for moving people. Earlier it was planned that Nissan and Bajaj will collaborate to bring the car to the market.

The RE 60, according to Bajaj has high fuel-efficiency ratios. Bajaj claims that this vehicle has hit 40kmpl under test conditions and a realistic mileage in daily driving conditions should be above 35kmpl. The 200cc rear-mounted engine's emissions will be an incredible 60g of CO2 per km.

When asked about the collaboration with alliance partner- Renault Nissan., Mr. Bajaj says they have yet not seen the car and will see that during the Auto Expo and further talks about the collaboration will happen after that.

Some facts of Baja RE 60 are:

  • Light weight monocoque metal polymer hybrid structure
  • Closed-loop fuel injection system
  • 200cc water cooled, 4 valve, DTSI technology will make around 20hp
  • Petrol, CNG and LPG are the only fuel options – Diesel engine not under consideration as this is a light weight vehicle
  • 44 liter rear boot storage, 7 liter under the hood and 400 liters when the seats are folded down
  • The RE6 has lockable cubby holes.
  • Max speed 70kph
  • Turning circle radius – 3.5m
  • Length – 2,752mm
  • Width – 1,312mm
  • Height – 1,650mm
  • Seating Capacity – 2+2 or 1+3
  • Kerb weight 400kg
  • Production of the RE60 will begin in a few months time
