BMW, Brilliance plan EV brand for China

Ahead of the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show that started in April, BMW hosted an event in China where the company had unveiled the BMW-Brilliance 5 Series Electric.

BMW AG has now confirmed the launch a new electric vehicle brand in China with local partner Brilliance JinBei Automobile Co. The move is being made to meet joint venture rules, BMW head of sales and marketing Ian Robertson said, confirming a German newspaper report in September.

BMW however didn’t elaborate on the future EV models for China or reveal which powertrains they might have, however, BMW has already collaborated with Brilliance on a plug-in hybrid 5-series concept, revealed at last year's Shanghai auto show as already briefed above.

Apart from this, BMW also has plans to unveil i3 and i8 electric vehicles globally in 2014.
