2012 Green Car of the year award : Honda Civic Natural Gas

When the curtain dropped on the stage where the 2012 Green Car of the Year was announced, it was the oft-overlooked 2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas that stood before the room full of journalists.

"There is no other vehicle like the Civic Natural Gas on American highways, and this recognition has been a long time coming for Honda," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com."

The new-generation Civic Natural Gas features greater fuel efficiency, a handsome and roomier new design and tailpipe-emissions levels untouchable by any other internal-combustion production vehicle," Cogan added.

The Civic Natural Gas produces 110 horsepower from its 1.8-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder engine and has a range of about 240 miles on a full tank. Other contenders for the 2012 award included the Ford Focus Electric, the Mitsubishi i, Toyota's Prius v, and the Volkswagen Passat TDI, all of which are currently on sale or will be by January 1, 2012.
