Maruti to develop its own SUV, display concept at Auto Expo 2012

Maruti Suzuki India to regain the market share is expanding the current fleet of cars and is entering into untouched segments including SUV and Premium Luxury segments.

Maruti Suzuki last year launched Premium Luxury Sedan Kizashi in India to compete with Toyota’s Camry, Honda’s Accord, Skoda’s Superb. However, the SUV segment still remained untouched by the market leader.

The company has announced that the concept model for its upcoming SUV will be displayed at Auto Expo 2012 however, the design and production might take another two years for the same.

“The segment has grown significantly in the past few years and we want to have a presence there,” said the executive, who did not want to be identified. “It will take at least two years for the model to be production-ready. The details regarding engine and other specifications will be worked out soon.”

Around 7-8% of the 2.5 million passenger vehicles sold in India are SUVs, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam). Companies such as Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd and Tata Motors Ltd dominate the segment, which is expected to double its share of the passenger vehicle pie over the next decade.

Meanwhile, the company also plans to launch Ertiga at the upcoming Auto Expo 2012. For more details on upcoming MUV/SUV in the Indian market, click here.
