Maruti Suzuki’s new plant to come up in Saurashtra

Accusing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring development of Saurashtra and Kutch, an industry body has asked the Centre to direct carmaker Maruti Udyog (MUL) to set up its proposed new production facility in one of the two regions.

Saurashtra Vyapar Udyog Mahamandal (SVUM) has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention to set up the facility in Saurashtra or Kutch. "Amidst the hype of development in Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch are being ignored and no worthwhile development project has taken place in these regions."
Now, the demand for Maruti Suzuki India Limited to set up its proposed Gujarat unit in the Saurashtra region has gained steam, with up to 13 trade and industry bodies and several individual professionals and students from the region writing letters to the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister and the company itself asking that the peninsula be considered as host.
The flood of letters came within a week after an industry association from Rajkot wrote to the Prime Minister seeking his intervention to direct Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) to explore setting up its proposed Gujarat plant in the Saurashtra-Kutch region.
The individuals who have joined the chorus include an Information Technology student from Rajkot currently studying in Pune, a metrologist, an employee in a finance firm, an automobile engineer working with German motor giant Volkswagen, a Pune-based techie from Rajkot and a social activist from Rajkot.
Shirish Ravani, President of Aji GIDC Association, said: “Our customers are all MNCs, so why not set-up a plant in Rajkot? There are 650 units here (at Aji) which deal with automobile parts and spares.”
