Continental to build new tyre manufacturing plant in South California, United States

German tire maker Continental AG said Thursday it plans to spend $500 million to build a new tire plant in South Carolina further bolstering a significant turnaround in the U.S. tire industry after years of plant closings and layoffs.
The company plans to begin construction of the plant in mid-2012 and complete the facility in 2013.

Continental expects to produce nearly five million passenger and light truck tires in the first phase of the project, when the plant reaches full production levels in 2017. The planned second phase would bring the plant's capacity to eight million units per year by 2021.

The new plant, to be located in Sumter about 45 miles east of Columbia, will manufacture car and light truck tires for the U.S. market. The facility is expected to produce 5 million tires annually when it reaches full production in 2017 and expand to 8 million by 2021. In all, more than 1,600 jobs are expected to be created
