The Audi e-tron Spyder is the latest in a line of eco-friendly sports cars. It follows all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive versions of the original e-tron electric car concept, but the difference here is that this particularly e-tron has no roof – and it's also a plug-in diesel hybrid.
The e-tron Spyder was unveiled as a concept at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Beneath its quirky, futuristic carbon-fiber body — it looks like a slightly modified Audi R8 supercar — lies a novel plug-in hybrid powertrain. A twin-turbo 3.0-liter diesel V-6 works with twin electric motors to provide 0-to-60-mph runs of just 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Yet even with that performance on tap, Audi says the car returns 107 mpg.
