In order to increase their market share in the Indian auto industry, Premier Automobiles is planning on launching 2 new variants of their only passenger vehicle currently available in India, Rio mini SUV. As of now, in the Indian car industry, Rio mini SUV is available in 3 variants namely, Rio EX for Rs 5.29 lakhs, Rio DX for Rs 5.54 lakhs, and Rio LX for Rs 5.99 lakhs.

All these variants are powered by the same 4 cylinder 1.5L diesel engine from Peugeot. What the new report suggests, is that the new Premier Rio will get the 1.3L MultiJet CDRi diesel engine from Fiat Auto. Premier will also launch a petrol variant which is expected to be powered by a 1.2L engine.
A petrol powered car makes sense as the initial buying cost will be lower by at least INR 70,000 to INR 1 Lakh, not to mention the fact that the running costs won’t be too much of a bother given the limited running that the car might see. This is exactly what Premier seems to be thinking, and this fact finds an explicit mention in Premier’s shareholder report for 2010-11. Along with this, Premier has also announced that the Rio will arrive with a CRDI Diesel engine in August 2011.

I personally would like to purchase this car at such a price and would feel the comfort of an SUV rather than buying a hatch like Figo, Liva or any other. Would you ?
